The petition

The Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990. The New York State Human Rights Law and the New York City Human Rights Law go further still. On paper, a disabled New Yorker has the right to walk into any business open to the public.

In practice, we still meet a step at the door. A restroom we cannot use. A counter out of reach. A service animal turned away. A website that does not work with a screen reader. The law has been settled for decades. The doors have not opened.

We ask you to:

  1. Enforce proactively. Inspect for accessibility instead of waiting for disabled people to file complaints one at a time.

  2. Publish the record. Report every year how many accessibility complaints were filed, how long they took, and how they ended.

  3. Help small businesses comply. Fund and publicize barrier-removal help so cost is never the excuse.

Access is not a favor. It is the law, and it is overdue.

Signed, the undersigned New Yorkers
